Orthodox Man as the Image of God

All too often do we as creatures of the Almighty forget that in each of us, no matter how spiritually depraved or perverted, is the ever present image of God. In some of us its very brilliance overshadows everything that we come in contact with and thus brings admiration and greater glory for God. On the other hand, there are those of us who live as though our existence depended only on our own initiative void of any spiritual power and thus denying the deity within us. Nevertheless, whether we recognize the fact or not. God’s image pervades our natures from the very moment of our conception.

[Père Sophrony :] Mais vous savez, notre communauté nous a été donnée par la divine Providence ; c’est notre famille dans laquelle par un effort commun nous devons trouver le salut. Le travail pour notre salut consiste aussi à servir ceux qui viennent. Maintenant nous ne pouvons pas nous séparer. Vous vous souvenez, je vous ai déjà dit qu’il faut vivre l’humanité comme un arbre colossal dont la racine est Adam. L’être humain est un arbre, pas une forêt. Si nous vivons comme cela toute l’humanité, nous devons aussi vivre notre communauté de cette manière-ci : « C’est ma vie ». Encore…

« Forme de Dieu » et « Forme de Serviteur » (2)

La kénose est l’abaissement du serviteur qui ne cherche pas sa propre gloire mais celle du Père qui l’a envoyé. Le Christ n’affirme jamais, ou presque jamais, sa divinité. En se renonçant totalement, en laissant sa nature divine inapparente, en abandonnant toute volonté propre au point de dire : « Le Père est plus grand que moi », il accomplit sur la terre l’œuvre d’amour de la Trinité. Et par le respect infini dont il témoigne envers la liberté humaine, au point de ne montrer aux hommes que le visage douloureusement fraternel de l’esclave et la chair douloureusement fraternelle de la croix, il éveille en l’homme la foi comme une réponse d’amour : car seuls les yeux de la foi reconnaissent la forme de Dieu sous la forme de l’esclave et, déchiffrant sous un visage humain la présence d’une personne divine, apprennent à déceler en tout visage le mystère de la personne créée à l’image de Dieu.  Ancore…

The Dream of the Rood

VatopaidiFriend: «The Dream of the Rood (=Cross)» is a wonderful Old English poem written in the 8th century (before the Schism). It tells of how the Cross appeared to a man in a vision and spoke to him. It provides profound Orthodox insight on the Mystery of the Atonement. The translation into modern English is by Mary Rambaran-Olm. Note that today, with the Old (Julian) Calendar, we celebrate the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross (September 14/27).

1 Lo! I will tell of the best of dreams,

Perhaps the most popular and basic definition of prayer is that it is a conversation with God. While this is essentially true, Orthodox Christianity, looks upon prayer as something even deeper than «conversation».
