The farmer plows the earth…

…cleans, sows seed, and awaits the mercy of God. If God doesn’t send rains and helpful winds when they are necessary, the farmer’s toils are in vain. It’s the same with us. If God doesn’t send the purifying waters of His grace, Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

What activates true love?

An icon of Elder Joseph the Hesychast

«When grace is operative in the soul of someone who is praying, then he is flooded with the love of God, so that he can no longer bear what he experiences. Afterwards, this love turns towards the world and man, whom he comes to love so much that he seeks to take upon himself the whole of human pain and misfortune so that everyone else might be freed from it. In general he suffers with every grief and misery, and even for  animals, so that he weeps when he thinks they are suffering. These are the properties of love, but it is prayer that activates them and calls them forth. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Hope in God (Elder Joseph the hesychast)

Elder Joseph the hesychast

Question yourself as to whether this faith is within you, or perhaps you are led by worldly wisdom.  And if you leave all things in the hands of God, behold! You have acquired faith and undoubtedly, without any question, you will find God to be your helper. And so, even should you be tried a myriad of times and should satan tempt you to abandon faith, Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Elder Joseph the Hesychast

Monasticism recognizes several venerable people, monks, who, in their time, left indelible marks in the history of the Orthodox Church. We can rightfully say that one of those leaders of monasticism is the venerable elder, father Joseph the Hesychast from the Holy Mount. He is the reviver and the guide of present monasticism in the Holy Mount, as well as Greece and America. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Monk Georgios, the hermit of Mount Athos.

Βy Elder Joseph (+) of Vatopaidi

It is incredibly daring for one to believe that one may describe the life of someone who is a friend of the Lord, who is a spiritual person and who according to the Scriptures “he judges everyone but no one dares judge him”. Therefore we will not describe his life, but we will simply give a minimal account of the way he lived, since as it happens, he had been our acquaintance.
This ‘most holy’ man, as I, without hesitation, describe brother Georgios, was known as ‘Branko’ the Serb.

Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983) [with many pictures]

by Monk Joseph of Dionysiou Monastery

Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983), fellow struggler for more than 40 years with Saint Elder Joseph the Hesychast ( 1897-1959)

It is not easy to describe in a few pages the life and works of a great ascetic of the might of blessed Elder Arsenios. He was born in Pontos. While still young he was burning with Holy zeal. He decided to leave his country and walk from Russia to Constantinoupole and from there to the Holy Land, where he served at the Holy Sepulchre and at other Holy places for almost ten years.

Elder Joseph, insignificant according to the world, was born in Drousia, a small village in the district of Paphos on the island of Saints [Cyprus], on July 1st 1921. His mother Evgenia gave birth to her little child when she was seven months pregnant at the Monastery of the Holy Unmerceneries in Giolou on the feastday of these Saints. The mother thought the child had died, yet he lived. The infant received the name Socrates upon being baptized.

Little Socrates was closely raised by his peasant parents living from a young age the hard life. When he succeeded in finishing the fourth grade of Elementary School, he was needed to do field work. Until he was fifteen years old he remained in his village. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Elder Joseph the Hesychast on Patience and Endurance

brotherhood
Fortieth Letter
God always helps. He always comes in time, but patience is necessary.

Come, my good and beloved sister. Come and I shall comfort your sorrow once again. Come and we shall bless God with the sweet voice of our heart, intoned through our mouth, and resonating in our nous, saying, «Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless His holy name.» [1]

Do you see how much the Lord loves us? Do you see how fortunate we ungrateful ones are for everything that His goodness gives us every day? But the time of the real harvest still awaits us: that blessed moment when we shall leave everything here and depart to the other homeland-the true one-the blessed life, the certain joy, so that each one of us receives the portion that the munificent, sweetest Jesus will give him.

O joy! O gratitude! O love of the heavenly Father! He cleanses us from all defilement, honors us, enriches us, bestowing His riches! There, my golden sister, there are no crafty people to wrong us. Envy and jealousy will have disappeared. There are no passions there whatsoever; those who have them have remained on the other side of the bridge. For a great gulf is fixed between here and there.
