Mount Athos, known in Greek as Ago Oros (Hholy Mountain), is a peninsula in Halkidiki, Northern Greece. This sacred area contains twenty monasteries including one Serbian, one Bulgarian and one Russian. Although the peninsula of Athos is part of Greece, it enjoys certain autonomy. The «Holy Community» under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul administrates the region. This administrative body is composed of representatives of the monasteries and maintains an office at Karyes (Iera Epistasia) where all visitors register upon arrival at Mount Athos. Holy Mount Athos will never perish

Source: Romfea

Byzantium may have perished and did not survive as a state. Nevertheless, it survives spiritually as a genuine way of life and as a culture. I would dare say that Byzantium lives on spiritually within the Holy Mount Athos! Our Lady’s garden exhibits resilience beyond time, as well as a unique way of life and a reviving vigor. read more…

An incredible prophesy by Saint Nilus the Myrrh-gusher of Holy Mount Athos

Saint Nilus the Myrrh-gusher. A fresco from the Holy Skete of St. Demetrios, Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopaidi, Holy Mount Athos

Saint Nilus lived in the 16th Century. He was born in a village near Tripolis in the Peloponnisos area in Greece. He became an ascetic on Mount Athos and died on the 12th November 1651. Fragrant myrrh was dripping out from his tomb and for this reason he is called Myrovlitis. read more…

The last days of Elder Sofronios of Essex (+11 Ιουλίου 1993)

Four days before he died, he closed his eyes and did not want to talk to us anymore. His face was radiant but not sad; full of tension. He had the same expression like when he was ministering the Devine liturgy. He would not open his eyes, or utter any words, but he would lift up his hand and bless us. He was blessing us without words but I knew that he was going away. Before, I used to pray that God should let him leave longer, just as we pray during the liturgy of St. Vasilios: “prolong the time of the old”. However during those days, when I knew he was leaving, I started praying: “My Lord, give your servant a rich welcome into your Kingdom”. I was praying using St Peter’s words, as we read it in his second letter. (2 Peter 11)
Thus I was praying intensely: “Please God give your servant a rich entry into your Kingdom and place him among his Fathers”. Then, I would call the names of all his brothers, ascetics, in Ayio Oros, whom I knew he had connections with, beginning with Saint Silouanos and then all the others.  read more…

The best meal of my life

By Spyros Mpazinas

I have lived away from my country for many years. I have travelled to many countries and continents. I have eaten at the world’s best restaurants. But I have enjoyed the best meal of my life at Holy Mount Athos.

Farther D was archontaris and could not visit the Dionisiou monastery to see blessed Elder Charalambos, former Abbot of the monastery, as he would have wished. For my part, I intended to visit the monastery to meet with Fr. Theoklitos as well. Fr D asked me to do him a favor. He wanted me to write down some of the questions he had on a piece of paper and record Fr Charalambo’s answers on the tape recorder.

No word mincing: Even if it was true that public property was awarded to Vatopedi as a gift, it would have been a proper reward!

by Spyros Mpazinas

VatopediFriend: A very apt reply to the lies spread by those servile to the IMF (and not only to this organization). A must read…

There was no forthright and honest truth ever been told about the Vatopedi case, even by those who regarded it as part of their family and thought they had a duty to defend it. Yes, I dare expose this omission because I regard this as my sacred duty. Very few people have publicly conceded that even if the monks had done what they have been accused of, we would still have a duty to defend them, just as one defends his father or his brother no matter what they have done.  read more…

The so called ‘Vatopedi scandal’ is nonexistent!

by Emilios Polygenis

There are many indications that political intrigue and other dark purposes are behind the fact that the so called ‘Vatopedi scandal’  is kept open. They slander Orthodoxy, the Holy Mount Athos and eventually Greece for their own means. There are many people who still wonder about some issues:
Where are the bribes? Where are the offshore companies that Vatopedi is supposed to own? Where is the so called ‘political monies’?

An open ended interview with monk Arsenios of Vatopedi (Sunday 16 May 2010)

by Sotiris Stathopoulos

Why did you make a statement to the investigating committee at this time?
In 2008, both Elder Efrem and I, just attended the investigative committee and handed over a memo, in which we had asked not testify as witnesses. They had then told us to wait outside. Eventually, we had left the building, under the impression that the committee had agreed not ask us to give a statement. Two years later though, today, when so many people continue to twist the truth, we decided that it is crucial that our position which is the only truth, be heard. All this time, so many things have been said about us without our permission, and we had been witnessing an unprecedented smear campaign which defamed the image of the Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopedi and its mission. read more…

The three friends and the King, a letter by blessed Elder Arsenios Spileotis and Hesychast

Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983), fellow struggler for more than 40 years with Saint Elder Joseph the Hesychast ( 1897-1959)

Mount Athos,

My dear child, P. I wish you the best. I have received your letter and I am pleased for your good health.

You did a good deed with the money you have sent me, because I needed it. I am working in the garden and I have been trying to carry water with a small tin because we did not have enough money to buy pipes. With these monies I will now buy the pipes and will be able to rest a great deal. I pray that you have the proper reward from God and that our Christ will give you the eternal goodness and also for us to be together in Paradise. Amen. Amen.

Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983) [with many pictures]

by Monk Joseph of Dionysiou Monastery

Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983), fellow struggler for more than 40 years with Saint Elder Joseph the Hesychast ( 1897-1959)

It is not easy to describe in a few pages the life and works of a great ascetic of the might of blessed Elder Arsenios. He was born in Pontos. While still young he was burning with Holy zeal. He decided to leave his country and walk from Russia to Constantinoupole and from there to the Holy Land, where he served at the Holy Sepulchre and at other Holy places for almost ten years.

Some miracles performed by the right hand of Saint John the Baptist (Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios, Holy Mount Athos)

Just as we are referring to the wonders performed by Saint John, The Baptist, in the present times, we are not departing from our purpose if we also refer to some miracles performed in the past, which have so far been unknown to most of our brothers, through which it is brilliantly manifested how he protects and helps the monastery and its monks…

We will omit the totally unexpected and paradoxical appearance of this protection by the Saint, because its detailed description is read during the joint feast on the day of its commemoration, the Fourth Sunday of Lent.

Let’s talk about some events which took place in the island of Poros, and refer to the dangers which those who were at sea have avoided from the day of their departure. In order to avoid talking about these things ourselves, let’s us present the account given by the Abbot Stephanos, who refers to the reasons for this sea voyage and to some historical facts. (These accounts are found in Code 627 of the monastery, 1733-1833).

He writes: “Kassandra has fallen, everyone have been taken captives by the agarinous(Turks) who have even been threatening to capture Ayio Oros. When the monks saw the Turks advancing, they picked up their holy relics and left towards romeiko. I also left among them, with my holy relics. Taking those of the monks who wanted to leave, we deserted the monastery on the 23 of February 1821.  read more…

The truly great Saints of our times

Elder Iakovos Tsalikis

These days when stress and insecurity prevails and unimportant issues are presented as crucial, I think we must remember the wonderful Saintly Elders (gerontes) of our times, who lived among us just a few years ago. These gerontes were regularly consoling hundreds of people of all religions and beliefs, believers and non believers alike, and were performing miracles with their prayers, curing many of their physical and mental illnesses.
Gerontas Paisios of Agio Oros (Holy Mount Athos), whose many prophecies have been regularly cited in this blog, used to say:
-“If one lives to serve his own interest only, he is a useless person”.

Letter in the press on Vatopedi Monastery

By Olga Konaris Kokkinos,
Journalist

Everyone knows that when one is deliberately ignoring certain facts, one is equally guilty had he been falsifying them. And this is true of the press.
In the last twenty days, Cypriot papers have been isolating some quotations from a certain book written by Yeronta Iosif Vatopedinos regarding the virtue of obedience, and gave the false impression that “yerontas”, or elder, tries to take the position of Jesus in the monasteries, and that Jesus Himself is nowhere to be found! They also implied that, when Yerontas Efraim travels outside Ayio Oros , carrying with him the Ayia Zoni, of our Lady, for people to worship, he does so in order to promote his image as “The” elder and that  any donations offered by the faithful are misappropriated by the monastery.

Karyes. A panorama view.
