Smyrna (İzmir)

Smyrna was the wealthiest of Ottoman cities, located on Turkey’s Aegean coast, it embodied that empire’s best qualities of cosmopolitanism and religious tolerance. The city was known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’.

Smyna had some of the most luxurious department stores, cinemas, opera houses in the world. While Greeks (320,000) predominated, the city also housed sizeable Armenian (10,000), Jewish, Turkish (140,000), European and American populations. Smyrna was a place where those people lived in peace.

“The night of Istanbul massacres” 55 years later

On September 6 and 7 in 1955 in the Turkish cities Istanbul and Izmir were organized the massacres of the Greek population, which later turned into Armenian as well. The tragic events of those days are known as «Night of Istanbul massacres» or «Night of national extermination in Constantinople.”

The massacres of the Christian population have been carried out by the Turkish authorities in response to the demand of the Cypriot Greeks to recognize their independence and to connect it with Greece.

Why the deep state targets Christians


Father Andrea Santoro, a Catholic priest, was killed in Trabzon in 2006. No one realized then that this was the beginning of a pattern. The militant nationalist who killed Santoro was just 17 years old. The Santoro case was completed with lightning speed.

The youngster was sentenced, but nothing was revealed. Then, in 2007, Hrant Dink, a Turkish-Armenian and a liberal journalist, was shot dead in front his newspaper, Agos, by another militant nationalist, who was again a 17-year-old boy from Trabzon. Three months after Dink’s murder, three missionaries were brutally killed in Malatya. After the Malatya massacre there were many other attacks and murder attempts targeting Christians once again. A Catholic priest was stabbed in the stomach during a service at a Catholic church in İzmir.
