Saint Syncletica (January 5)

St Syncletica. Fresco by Elder Sophrony Sakharov at the refectory of St John the Baptist Monastery in Essex.

Our holy mother Syncletica was born at Alexandria in the course of the fourth century to rich and devout parents, who came originally from Macedonia. From her youth, she had been seen as an excellent match on account of her great beauty, intelligence and virtues, and she had many suitors; but she remained deaf and blind to every worldly attraction, for she aspired only to spiritual marriage to Christ, the heavenly Bridegroom. Bringing her flesh into subjection by fasting and austerities of every kind, she constantly gathered her spirit in the depths of her heart and cried out night and day: My Beloved is mine, and I am His (Song of Songs 2:16).

On the death of her parents, she distributed her great fortune to the poor and then, accompanied by her blind sister, she fled far from the city. Read more…

The gravestone of the dreams of the Skopjans that they are Macedonians, descendants of Alexander the Great, is made of two books and a documentary.

The renaming of the Yugoslavian area of Vardaska to Macedonia by Tito and Stalin in August 1944, led today’ s inhabitants of FYROM into fantasising that they are the Macedonians and, particularly, that they are the descendants of Alexander the Great. The way Hitler, in order to establish the Nazi regime, kept declaring that the Germans belonged to the Arian race, the same way Tito, in order to take control of the Aegean and support the expansionist plans of the Soviet Union, renamed Vardaska to Macedonia, aiming at the extraction of Macedonia from Greece.

My Greek DNA Beats Yours

FLAG macedonia

]Dear U of U: You don’t have to be born in Greece to be a Greek.
By John Saltas

A couple of years ago, I and other family members traced our DNA through FamilyTree.com. My DNA—so that of my father, his Greek father and so on—tested into Haplogroup R1a1, meaning our Y chromosomes have been wandering around central Europe since at least the time of the last Ice Age. My mother’s Cretan father (tested via a male cousin born to my mother’s brother) was shown to be a member of Haplogroup J2. That group is found throughout the ancient seafaring regions of the eastern Mediterranean. Landing there perhaps thanks to the Phoenicians, J2 is prevalent on the island of Crete, and it dates at least to the Minoan era.

Exhibition in Germany: Alexander the Great and the Opening of the World

Alexander the Great

Few figures in history have been as fascinating as Alexander the Great. In 323 B.C. he died at the early age of 32. His short life and his personality, his legendary march through the vast Persian empire, and the immeasurable impact and later effects have called forth countless stories and legends for more than two thousands years.

The exhibition ?Alexander the Great and the Opening of the World. Asia?s Cultures in Transformation? follows the course of the Macedonian king Alexander to Central Asia and thereby demonstrates the resulting cultural, economical and social upheavals to the visitors.

Τοιχογραφία του 1568 στο Άγιον Όρος χαρακτηρίζει τον Αλέξανδρο ως «βασιλέα των Ελλήνων» – Mural of 1568 on Mount Athos calls Alexander “king of Hellenes”

Mural of 1568 calls Alexander king of Hellenes

From greek newspaper ‘Kathimerini‘. The mural dates from 1568 and anyone can see it in Moni Docheiareiou in Mt. Athos. The monastery of Docheiareiou appears to date back to the early years of the eleventh century.

HELLENES WRITE TO AHI : “GEOGRAPHICAL QUALIFIER” FOR MACEDONIA?

For Immediate Release: July 11, 2009

NEW YORK—The Hellenic League of America (HLA) alerts the community about support for the false historical revisionist “geographical qualifier” for Macedonia. Several statements by the American Hellenic Institute AHI –one of the oldest establishment institutions purporting to support Hellenism in America – indicate AHI support for legislation supporting the “geographical qualifier” for Macedonia in Congress. This expresses a split between historical truth and community opinion and the false historical revisionism supported by the Greek political establishment or Greek ruling class in Greece, and its lobbies or allies in Washington DC. Letters to the Editor

The Washington Times

3600 New York Avenue, NE

Washington, DC 20002

To the Editor:

Ivica Bocevski neglected to clarify the legacy of the so-called name dispute, as reported in The Washington Times recently («No names, please,» Embassy Row, World, June 12). The country Mr. Bocevski hails from is a state that was part of the former Yugoslavia, an artificial political construct that waged war on Greece during the immediate aftermath of World War II. World Classical Scholars: Macedonia is Greek (Letter to President Barack Obama)

http://macedonia-evidence.org/obama-letter.html

The Honorable Barack Obama
President, United States of America
White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,

We, the undersigned scholars of Graeco-Roman antiquity, respectfully request that you intervene to clean up some of the historical debris left in southeast Europe by the previous U.S. administration.

On November 4, 2004, two days after the re-election of President George W. Bush, his administration unilaterally recognized the “Republic of Macedonia.” This action not only abrogated geographic and historic fact, but it also has unleashed a dangerous epidemic of historical revisionism, of which the most obvious symptom is the misappropriation by the government in Skopje of the most famous of Macedonians, Alexander the Great.

We believe that this silliness has gone too far, and that the U.S.A. has no business in supporting the subversion of history. Let us review facts. (The documentation for these facts [here in boldface] can be found attached and at: http://macedonia-evidence.org/documentation.html)

The land in question, with its modern capital at Skopje, was called Paionia in antiquity. Mts. Barnous and Orbelos (which form today the northern limits of Greece) provide a natural barrier that separated, and separates, Macedonia from its northern neighbor. The only real connection is along the Axios/Vardar River and even this valley “does not form a line of communication because it is divided by gorges.”

FOR THOSE WHO SEEK A NAME FOR «MACEDONIA»

vardarska
THE NAME OF THE AREA BEFORE WORLD WAR II WAS VARDARSKA. THE NAME MACEDONIA WAS GIVEN TO THEM BY THEIR LEADER JOSEF TITO ( HEREABOVE YOU WILL FIND THEIR MAP BEFORE 1940)

A FEW NOTES FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW:

1. ALEXANDER THE GREAT AND HIS TEACHER ARISTOTLE SPOKE HELLENIC. NOT ANY SLAVIC LANGUAGE.

2. THE MACEDONIAN CAPITAL WAS PELLA, NOT SKOPJE.

3. ALEXANDER’S SISTER WAS CALLED THESSALONIKI, NOT SOLUN LIKE THE SLAVS CALL IT.

SO, VARDARSKA IT IS.

WE’VE HAD ENOUGH WITH THIS JOKE.

SPREAD THIS MESSAGE ALL OVER THE WORLD

«Letter from Macedonia»

Dear Sir,

I opened the January/February issue of Archaeology today and eagerly turned to «A Letter from Macedonia» only to discover that it was actually a letter from ancient Paionia – the land north of Mt. Barmous and Mt. Orbelos. Livy’s account of the creation of the Roman province of Macedonia (45.29.7 and 12) makes clear that the Paionians lived north of those mountains (which form today the geographically natural northern limits of Greece) and south of the Dardanians who were in today’s Kosovo. Strabo (7. frag 4) is even more succinct in saying that Paionia was north of Macedonia and the only connection from one to the other was (and is today) through the narrow gorge of the Axios (or Vardar) River. In other words, the land which is described by Matthew Brunwasser in his «Owning Alexander» was Paionia in antiquity.
