Effect of Lullabies on the Human Brain

Years of research show that soft, slow, methodical music and words–such as those of a lullaby–can lull the mind to sleep by inducing delta waves in the brain. «Music exists in every culture, and infants have excellent musical abilities that cannot be explained by learning,» says Dr. Norman Weinberger, professor of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California at Irvine. «Mothers everywhere sing to their infants because babies understand it. Music seems to be part of our biological heritage.»

From the Womb

«There are whole studies–there are actual recordings to what the baby actually hears in utero,» says Dr. Patricia St. John, an adjunct assistant professor of music education at Columbia University. She refers to the recordings of Dr. Sheila C. Woodward, chairwoman of music education at the University of Southern California, whose research may explain, in part, why newborns are more tuned to their mothers’ voices than to their fathers’ voices. Most children inherently love music and rhythm, and are inclined to move to the beat of music as soon as they are able. «They sing before they talk,» says St. John. «They dance before they walk.» Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Why Women Cry

A little boy asked his mother, «Why are you crying?»

«Because I’m a woman,» she told him.

«I don’t understand,» he said.

His Mom just hugged him and said, «And you never will.»

Later the little boy asked his father, «Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?»

The Nativity of the Most-holy Theotokos (September 8)

12B03The Holy Virgin Mary was born of aged parents, Joachim and Anna. Her father was of the lineage of David, and her mother of the lineage of Aaron. Thus, she was of royal birth by her father, and of priestly birth by her mother. In this, she foreshadowed Him Who would be born of her as King and High Priest. Her parents were quite old and had no children. Because of this they were ashamed before men and humble before God. In their humility they prayed to God with tears, to bring them joy in their old age by giving them a child, as He had once given joy to the aged Abraham and his wife Sarah by giving them Isaac. The Almighty and All-seeing God rewarded them with a joy that surpassed all their expectations and all their most beautiful dreams. For He gave them not just a daughter, but the Mother of God. He illumined them not only with temporal joy, but with eternal joy as well. God gave them just one daughter, and she would later give them just one grandson-but what a daughter and what a Grandson! Read more… Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Akathist to the Mother of God

Having secretly received the command, the Archangel hastened into Joseph’s abode and spoke to the Holy Virgin. He Who bowed the Heavens with His descending, is wholly contained, yet unchanged in You. And seeing Him taking the likeness of a servant in your womb, I stand in amazement and cry unto you:

Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride [3 times].

Kontakion 1

Unto you, O Theotokos, invincible Champion, your City [or «we your people»], in thanksgiving ascribes the victory for the deliverance from sufferings. And having your might unassailable, free us from all dangers, so that we may cry unto you:

Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride.

Eikos 1

The Archangel was sent from Heaven to cry ‘Rejoice!’ to the Theotokos. And beholding You, O Lord, taking bodily form, he stood in awe, and with his bodiless voice he cried aloud to her such things as these:

Rejoice, you through whom joy shall shine forth. Rejoice, you through whom the curse will vanish.

Mother, Baby ‘Die’ in Labor but Are Revived

Tracy Hermanstorfer cradles her newborn son, Coltyn. Doctors said mother and son "died" during childbirth but revived

Mike Hermanstorfer was clutching his pregnant wife’s hand when her life slipped away in a Colorado hospital on Christmas Eve, and then he cradled his newborn son’s limp body seconds after a medical team delivered the baby by cesarean section.

Minutes later he saw his son come to life in his arms under the feverish attention of doctors, and soon he learned his wife had inexplicably come back to life.

«My legs went out from underneath me,» Hermanstorfer said Tuesday. «I had everything in the world taken from me, and in an hour and a half I had everything given to me.»

Hermanstorfer’s wife, Tracy, went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing during labor on Thursday, said Dr. Stephanie Martin, a maternal fetal medicine specialist at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, where the Hermanstorfers had gone for the birth of their son.

«She had no signs of life. No heartbeat, no blood pressure, she wasn’t breathing,» said Martin, who had rushed to Hermanstorfer’s room to help. «The baby was, it was basically limp, with a very slow heart rate.»

After their miraculous recovery, both mother and the baby, named Coltyn, appear healthy with no signs of problems, Martin said.

For parents all over the world a prayer to God for our children and for all the children of the world for their protection and guidance

Mother and child

O God and Father, Creator and Preserver of all creation!

Give to our poor children and to all the children of the world, the grace of Your Holy Spirit, that He may light within them that true fear of God which is the beginning of wisdom, and common sense, the following of which is a source of eternal praise. Bless them with true knowledge of You, keep them from all idolatry and false teaching. Enable them to grow in true saving faith and in all piety, and let those be with them to the end.

Grant to them a faithful, obedient, humble heart and intellect, that they might grow in years and in grace before God and before men. Plant in their hearts love for Your Divine Word, so that they might be pious during prayers and during divine services, that they might show respect for the servants of Your Word, and be sincere in their actions, modest in body, chaste in morals, honest in word, faithful in action, diligent in studies, happy to complete their tasks, and wise and just toward everyone.
