Elder Arsenios Spileotis (1886-1983), fellow struggler for more than 40 years with Saint Elder Joseph the Hesychast ( 1897-1959)

It is not easy to describe in a few pages the life and works of a great ascetic of the might of blessed Elder Arsenios. He was born in Pontos. While still young he was burning with Holy zeal. He decided to leave his country and walk from Russia to Constantinoupole and from there to the Holy Land, where he served at the Holy Sepulchre and at other Holy places for almost ten years.

Ιδρύθηκε λίγα χρόνια πριν το 980 και ονομαζόταν Μονή του Αγίου Παύλου ή του Ξηροποτάμου. Κτήτοράς της φαίνεται να ήταν ο φημισμένος μοναχός Παύλος, πού ίδρυσε και τη Μονή του Αγίου Νικηφόρου, η οποία επίσης ονομαζόταν (και ονομάζεται) του Ξηροποτάμου. Το 14ο αι. μετατράπηκε σε κελλί της Μονής Ξηροποτάμου και περί το 1370 επανήλθε και πάλι στην τάξη των Μονών. Μεγάλος ευεργέτης της Μονής υπήρξε η σερβο-ελληνικής καταγωγής πριγκήπισσα Μαρία (Μάρω), σύζυγος του σουλτάνου Μουράτ Β΄ και μητέρα του Μωάμεθ του Πορθητού. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Elder Joseph, insignificant according to the world, was born in Drousia, a small village in the district of Paphos on the island of Saints [Cyprus], on July 1st 1921. His mother Evgenia gave birth to her little child when she was seven months pregnant at the Monastery of the Holy Unmerceneries in Giolou on the feastday of these Saints. The mother thought the child had died, yet he lived. The infant received the name Socrates upon being baptized.

Little Socrates was closely raised by his peasant parents living from a young age the hard life. When he succeeded in finishing the fourth grade of Elementary School, he was needed to do field work. Until he was fifteen years old he remained in his village. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »
