Ascension of Jesus Christ

VatopaidiFriend: The Day of Ascension, is celebrated in many European countries by being a public holiday. Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden and Switzerland are honouring the Ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

… and ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father

After his resurrection from the dead Jesus appeared to men for a period of forty days after which he «was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God» (Mk 16:19; see also Lk 24:50 and Acts 1:9-11).

The ascension of Jesus Christ is the final act of his earthly mission of salvation. The Son of God comes «down from heaven» to do the work which the Father gives him to do; and having accomplished all things, he returns to the Father bearing for all eternity the wounded and glorified humanity which he has assumed (see e.g. Jn 17).

Venerable Macarius of Zhabyn the Wonderworker

Saint Macarius of Zhabyn, Wonderworker of Belev, was born in the year 1539. In his early years he was tonsured with the name Onuphrius, and in the year 1585 he founded Zhabyn’s Monastery of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple near the River Oka, not far from the city of Belev. In 1615 the monastery was completely destroyed by Polish soldiers under the command of Lisovski. Returning to the charred remains, the monk began to restore the monastery. He again gathered the brethren, and in place of the wooden church a stone church was built in honor of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (November 21), with a bell-tower at the gates.

St. Herman of Alaska

Venerable Herman of Alaska, Wonderworker of All America. A spiritual mission was organized in 1793, made up of monks of the Valaam Monastery. They were sent to preach the Word of God to the native inhabitants of northwestern America, who only ten years before had come under the sovereignty of Russia. St Herman was among the members of this Mission.

St Herman came from a family of merchants of Serpukhov, a city of the Moscow Diocese. His name before he was tonsured, and his family name are not known. (The monastic name is given when a monk takes his vows). He had a great zeal for piety from youth, and at sixteen he entered monastic life. (This was in 1772, if we assume that Herman was born in 1756, although sometimes 1760 is given as the date of his birth.) First he entered the Trinity-Sergius Hermitage which was located near the Gulf of Finland on the Peterhof Road, about 15 versts (about 10 miles) from St Petersburg.

St Gregory Palamas the Archbishop of Thessalonica

gregory palamas

Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica, was born in the year 1296 in Constantinople. St Gregory’s father became a prominent dignitary at the court of Andronicus II Paleologos (1282-1328), but he soon died, and Andronicus himself took part in the raising and education of the fatherless boy. Endowed with fine abilities and great diligence, Gregory mastered all the subjects which then comprised the full course of medieval higher education. The emperor hoped that the youth would devote himself to government work. But Gregory, barely twenty years old, withdrew to Mount Athos in the year 1316 (other sources say 1318) and became a novice in the Vatopedi monastery under the guidance of the monastic Elder St Nicodemus of Vatopedi (July 11). There he was tonsured and began on the path of asceticism. A year later, the holy Evangelist John the Theologian appeared to him in a vision and promised him his spiritual protection. Gregory’s mother and sisters also became monastics.

Orthodoxy. The Best-Kept Secret

By Fr. Peter Gillguist

He who seeks, finds.

He who seeks, finds.

When we came into the Orthodox Church in 1987, I started getting telephone calls from newspaper reporters and radio and T.V. people in cities I was about to visit. Often, they were responding to a news release sent out by a Church where I was to speak. They generally wanted to hear more about our story of 2000 evangelicals becoming Orthodox. They would ask me about charismatics and Episcopalians coming as well.

Then, almost always, before the end of the interview, they would insert, «Well, is this a trend?»

My answer was, «I’m not prepared to say that.» I would often add, «I think it will be one day.» But I felt it would be hype to call it a trend. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco blasts Met. Jonah for persecuting the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople

VatopaidiFriend: Rev. Fathers, dear brothers in Christ, The main aim of the contributors of the vatopaidi.wordpress.com is to work for the worldwide unity of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, namely Orthodoxy. Any texts concerning the Orthodox spiritual life, any news about Orthodoxy or other relevant information is welcomed. Our aim is to publish and/or republish Orthodox information from all Patriarchates and all jurisdictions that are in communion with the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Within this context, we avoid to interfere with church politics. In some cases the latter has more to do with human errors than with divine illumination. Human errors are to be corrected with spirit of love in Christ and humility. We support all Orthodox Patriarchates (Constantinople, Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Moscow, e.t.c.) and all Orthodox jurisdictions. However, we always keep in mind that as the Ecumenical conventions have decided, the primary (among equals) patriarchate is the one in Constantinople. For this reasons we decided to republish the letter of His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco.

mount-sermon2Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.
Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward
in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you (Matthew 5:11-12).

Dearly Beloved in the Lord,
Christos Anesti!

The Church of Constantinople, tracing her apostolic roots back to St. Andrew the First Called of the Apostles, continues to preserve the integrity and sanctity of our Christian Orthodox Church. The apostolicity of the Throne of Constantinople is further acknowledged by the historical fact that the Apostle and Evangelist John preached in Asia Minor.

For over 2000 years, faithful Orthodox Christians have kept the Church in Constantinople alive. This is especially true of the last 556 years, since the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans. Each day the faithful of the Ecumenical Throne, both clergy and laity, live their lives witnessing to our precious Faith in a Muslim world. Their world is one of sacrifice and persecution that comes from outside the Church. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!

repentance

Dearly Beloved in the Lord:

Christ is in our midst!

Our Church has gone through a tragic and bitter episode in her history. Many souls suffered shipwreck, demoralized by the sins of a few. That is over. But the lingering bitterness and mistrust, resentment and desire for retribution, hang over us. We must heal this, both on an individual as well as corporate level. The only way to do this is repentance, using this season of repentance to make changes in our lives, cleanse our hearts and minds, and embrace the hope that can only be grasped by forgiveness. Unless we forgive others from our hearts, we cannot accept God’s forgiveness for our own sins. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »
