He plainly declares that he opposes the visit, explaining that Catholicism is a heresy and the visit of the Head of the Catholic Church to Cyprus will scandalize the minds of innocent, faithfully people. At the same time, he stresses that neither adverse reactions nor rude or bad manners must be shown.

The Church of God is not an institution, it is a miracle and it is a mystery. It is a miracle because how could we expect that closeness of God which is revealed to us in the Church. And it is also a mystery in the original sense of the world, something which cannot be either explained or conveyed in words, something that can be known only through a spellbound communion with God. The English word “God” comes from a Germanic root that means “him, before whom one prostrates in adoration”.This is where our knowledge of God begins – the sense of the divine presence that forces us down to our knees, spellbound, silent, not with an empty silence that is ours at times but with a silence which is nothing but intent worshipful listening, listening to the presence, listening to that presence which is at the core of the silence. The Struggle for True Communion

For many Protestants (and some others) whose Church experience has largely been shaped in the past few decades, one of the most disconcerting aspects of a first visit to an Orthodox Church is the fact that not everybody, not all Baptized Christians, are permitted to receive communion. Indeed, communion is restricted to Orthodox Christians who have made preparation to receive (that’s another topic). For some, this is a surprise, for others, not, and for still some few, this is a welcome fact. When I first visited an Orthodox Church I fell into this last group. I did not rejoice that I was not able to take communion, but I rejoiced that I was not allowed to (in the state of schism in which I was living). A task that we as Orthodox Christians have…

The first and most important thing to remember is that we do not bring anyone into the Church – its not our job. We do not attract people to the faith, we do not convince people of the Truth, we don’t do any of that. God is the One Who attracts people, Who brings them in the door, Who convicts their hearts, Who brings them to repentance, Who convinces them of the Truth!

We do none of this.

Too often the individual person is made responsible for doing God’s task, but in attempting to do God’s work, he neglects his own!! What is our task? Our task is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit (St. Seraphim), our task is the working out of our salvation, our task is to repent and weep for our sins, our task is to enter the Kingdom of God. This more than anything else is what we must do. This is an evangelistic task – indeed the primary evangelistic task.

There are other «tasks», however, which derive from this one which are a bit more specific to «evangelism». It is God who brings people to the door of the Church and who convinces them that they should enter – however, we must keep the door to the Church open and visible!!! Lord, Crown Me!

In his Epistle to Timothy, his beloved spiritual son, St. Paul admonishes him and us as well, that we watch, that we be diligent in all things, that we endure afflictions, that we do the work of an evangelist, the work of those who spread the Good News of the Gospel throughout the world, that we make full proof of our ministry. Each of us Orthodox Christians as disciples of Him Whom we call Lord and Saviour, has a ministry, a special function that we are to fulfill in our lives. If we are truly evangelists of the Lord, if in our lives we bear witness to Him, we testify to Him, if our lives are living sermons for all people to look at and admire and to know that we are His Disciples, then we deserve the name “Christian”, we maintain the citizenship that is granted us in His Kingdom when we are baptized and when we repent, and when we come to the chalice to receive His precious Body and Blood. Orthodoxy and the Environment: A Life of Wonder

In a recent talk on salvation, Bishop Kallistos Ware spoke of four aspects of salvation: personal, organic, communal, and cosmic. In speaking of the cosmic dimension of salvation he quoted from a prayer at the time of earthquakes: «The earth, although without words, yet groans and cries aloud, ‘Why all you people, do you pollute me with so many evils?'» His Grace went on to give a definition of man as «the one who can give thanks.» A Christian is a person who gives thanks, whose mode of being is that of being thankful. It is this attitude of thankfulness that enables us to be transformed from a polluter of the earth to one who takes care of the earth. Η μητέρα του Θωμαΐδα ήταν κόρη τού δεσπότη της Ηπείρου Ιωάννη Β΄ Ορσίνη (1323-1335) και αδελφή τού τελευταίου δεσπότη της Ηπείρου Νικηφόρου Β΄ Ορσίνη (1338-1340, 1356-1359).

In a Single Moment – Paradise

Pascha and Bright Week always remind me of the joy of paradise. The doors of the altar stand open for all of Bright Week, reminding the people of God that Christ has opened paradise to us all. These are some thoughts on the suddenness and nearness of paradise. As the Elder Cleopas used to say, “May Paradise consume you!”

The Exapostelarian for the Matins of Good Friday is the hymn, “The Wise Thief.” It draws our attention to the mercy of God – who promised paradise to the wise thief, “This day.” Thoughts on the nearness of paradise are also a theme in the writings of Dostoevsky. What Christ Accomplished on the Cross

A talk delivered at the Annual Lenten Clergy Confession of the New Gracanica Metropolitanate and the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Jackson, California, March 4/17, 2004.

The topic of today’s talk—what Christ accomplished on the Cross—is of course a prime subject of contemplation during the Lenten season, as we prepare to prayerfully commemorate Christ’s passion, death, and the inevitable consequence of His death: His holy Resurrection. As we call to mind and repent of our sins during the Holy Fast, we also call to mind that which has saved us from the eternal consequences of sin. We call to mind Christ’s life-creating death on the Cross, which He underwent for the salvation of each one of us.

The Orthodox dogma of our redemption—which includes the doctrines concerning Christ’s incarnation, death and Resurrection—is the chief dogma of our Faith, together with the dogma of the Holy Trinity. I have been especially contemplating and reading Patristic writings on this subject for a few years now. It is a vast subject. In this lecture I will try to outline its main points in a linear and chronological fashion. I will speak about the state of man before the Fall and after the Fall, and then speak about how Christ saved us from the consequences of the Fall through His incarnation, death and Resurrection. Jesus and the Donkey…

What exactly is the meaning of Palm Sunday? We know the simple facts: Jesus arrived in Jerusalem and asked his disciples to bring him a foal, the colt of a donkey to ride upon into the gates of . As Jesus entered the city the crowds began shouting, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” and waved palm branches and spread out their coats on the streets. But this story is quite rich with symbolism and points to something much deeper.

First of all, the waving of palms and laying down of coats by the people was no accident or coincidence. Palms were signs of victory and of military achievement. The Romans gave palms to the victors in the Roman games and emperors gave them to their subjects following thier military conquests. The Jewish people had picked up on this and in 1 Maccabees the people waved palm branches to celebrate the newly established independence of Jerusalem and Judea.

Mid-Lent: The Worship of the Cross… A Weapon of Victory!!

«And he said unto them: Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his own soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.» (Mark 8:34-38. This, the Third Sunday of the Fast is dedicated every year to the Adoration of the Holy Cross. As the Cross is at the center of our Faith, it seemed natural to the Church over the course of history, to place this «weapon of victory» in the midst of the assembly mid-way through the most spiritually intense season of the year. Gazing and meditating upon it, the faithful, who have chosen the way of the Cross as the way that leads to life, are renewed and strengthened for what remains of their Lenten pilgrimage to Pascha. Moral Dilemmas of Globalization by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

We should first like to express our joy that this meeting of distinguished and dynamic economists, political figures, and other eminent dignitaries has included on the agenda of its discussions the human dimension of globalization of the economy, as well as non-economic values. There is no doubt that when ranking values the human person occupies a place higher than economic activity. Neither is there any doubt that economic progress, which is present when there is growth in economic activity, becomes useful when and only when it serves to enhance the non-economic values that make up human culture. This is the reason that justifies our Modesty’s presence among this luminous gathering of eminent economic activists although we bear no relation to matters of economy.

The advance of humanity towards globalisation is a fact arising primarily out of the private sector, in particular they are the desires of multinational economic giants. This fact finds support in the incredible development of communications. Already the role of states is being constantly downgraded, with few exceptions; whereas the role of the economically powerful is growing in magnitude, even among the larger states.

Ο Βατοπαιδινός Άγιος Ιγνάτιος Μαριουπόλεως (+1786)

Γεννήθηκε στις αρχές του 18ου αιώνα στο νησί Θέρμη. Μάλλον πρόκειται για το νησί των Κυκλάδων Κύθνο, πού ονομαζόταν και Θερμιά, λόγω των εκεί θερμών ιαματικών πηγών. Ήταν γόνος της γνωστής και ευσεβούς οικο­γενείας Γεζεδινού.

Νέος μετέβη στο Άγιον Όρος. Στη μονή Βατοπαιδίου μόναζε ένας κοντινός συγγενής του. Αγαπώντας ολόκαρδα τη μοναχική πολιτεία, εγκατέλειψε κάθε κοσμική ματαιότητα και εκάρη μοναχός με το όνομα Ιγνάτιος. Αργότερα χειροτονήθηκε ιερέας.

Για την αρετή του κλήθηκε να ποιμάνει ένα απομακρυσμένο ποίμνιο, πού βρισκόταν κάτω από σκληρό ταταρικό ζυγό. Το 1769 χειροτονήθηκε επίσκοπος Γκοτφέϊ και Κεφάϊ της Κριμαίας. Χαρακτηρίζεται ως καλοκάγαθος και ακαταπόνητος ιεράρχης, πού κατέκτησε την αγάπη και τον σεβασμό του ταλαιπωρημένου ποιμνίου του. Ό Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Κωνσταντινουπόλεως του έδωσε για την καλή διακονία του, τον τίτλο του αρχιε­πισκόπου και τον έκανε μέλος της Ιεράς Συνόδου του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου.

St Ephrem the Syrian (January 28)

Our Righteous Father Ephrem the Syrian was a prolific Syriac language hymn writer and theologian of the 4th century. He is venerated by Christians throughout the world, but especially among Syriac Christians, as a saint. His feast day in the Orthodox Church is January 28.

Ephrem was born around the year 306, in the city of Nisibis (the modern Turkish town of Nusaybin, on the border with Syria). Internal evidence from Ephrem’s hymnody suggests that both his parents were part of the growing Christian community in the city, although later hagiographers wrote that his father was a pagan priest. Numerous languages were spoken in the Nisibis of Ephrem’s day, mostly dialects of Aramaic. The Christian community used the Syriac dialect. Various pagan religions, Judaism and early Christian sects vied with one another for the hearts and minds of the populace. It was a time of great religious and political tension. The Roman Emperor Diocletian had signed a treaty with his Persian counterpart, Nerses in 298 that transferred Nisibis into Roman hands. At that time also the Iberian nation, who live in the clime of Pontus, accepted the laws of God’s word and faith in the kingdom of heaven. This so excellent deed was brought about by a certain captive woman who had fallen among them, and who led a life of faith and complete sobriety and virtue, and throughout the days and nights unceasingly offered up prayers to God. The very novelty of this thing began to amaze the barbarians, and they diligently Inquired what it meant. She told them simply the truth of the matter, namely that she was wont thus to worship Christ her God. The strangeness of this name seemed to the barbarians the most astonishing feature of the whole business. Xs often happens, however, her very persistence aroused among the womenfolk a certain curiosity to see whether such devotion might not win some reward.

Άγιος Σάββας ο Α’, αρχιεπίσκοπος των Σέρβων, ο Βατοπαιδινός (1176-1236)

Υϊός του Στέφανου Νεμάνια, μεγάλου ζουπάνου των Σέρβων, ο κατά κόσμον Ράτσκο. Γεννήθηκε γύρω στα 1176. Από νέος ποθούσε τη μοναχική ζωή και, όταν του δόθηκε η ευκαιρία, αναχώρησε για το Άγιον Όρος, το 1193, όπου με σπάνιο ζήλο επιδόθηκε στους ασκητικούς αγώνες, στις μονές του Ρώσικου και του Βατοπεδίου. Στη δεύτερη αναδείχθηκε και νέος κτήτορας. Εκεί τον ακολούθησε και ο πατέρας του με το μοναχικό όνομα Συμεών και ίδρυσαν τη μονή του Χιλανδαρίου (1198). Ο άγιος Ευθύμιος και οι 12 οσιομάρτυρες της Μονής Βατοπαιδίου (+1280, 4 Ιανουαρίου)

Ο όσιος Ευθύμιος διετέλεσε ηγούμενος κατά το δεύτερο μισό του 13ου αιώνος της μονής Βατοπαιδίου σε μιά κρίσιμη περίοδο για την πορεία της Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και του Αγίου Όρους. Μετά τη σύνοδο της Λυών το 1274, όπου υποστηρίχθηκε η ένωση των Εκκλησιών, οι λατινόφρονες απεσταλμένοι του αυτοκράτορος Μιχαήλ Η΄ του Παλαιολόγου (1259-1282) και του πατριάρχου Ιωάννου ΙΑ΄ Βέκκου (1275-1282), θέλησαν να πείσουν τους Αγιορείτες μοναχούς για τα αιρετικά δόγματα. Τούτο συνέβη περί το 1279/1280. Δυστυχώς ορισμένοι ερευνητές αμφισβητούν τα γεγονότα και τα συγχίζουν με κατοπινά, αποδίδοντάς τα στους Καταλανούς.

Ο όσιος Ευθύμιος «εχόμενος στερρώς των ορθοδόξων παραδόσεων ήλεγξε τους λατινόφρονας». Γι’ αυτό, κατά τον όσιο Νικόδημο τον Αγιορείτη, «δεθείς με άλυσιν, κατεποντίσθη υπ’ αυτών εν τη θαλάσση του Καλαμιτζίου». Κατά δε τον Μανουήλ Γεδεών, «Ευθύμιον δε τον ηγούμενον δήσαντες αλύσει πέραν της θαλάσσης εις το παραθαλάσσιον, Καλλαμίτζιον καλούμενον, επάνω υφά­λου πέτρας εάσαντες απεπνίγη ο αοίδιμος». The distance and separation between God and humanity resulting from sin has been abolished with the assumption of the entire human nature by the Only-Begotten Son and Pre-eternal Word of God. It was God’s good will – that is to say, His initiative and will – that the incarnation of His Son should abolish all such distance uniting heaven and earth, as well as creation with its Creator. Turkey prepares to join EU in a building confiscated from the Orthodox

Unbelievable but true: the headquarters of the Secretariat for the entry of Turkey into the European Union is a building confiscated from the Orthodox Christian community in the 90s. The building is located in Istanbul, in the well-known area of Ortakoy, under the first bridge over the Bosphorus.

Before the seizure, the building was used as a primary school for children of the minority Orthodox in Ortakoy. Here, once lived a thriving Orthodox community, now non-existent because of past purges against minorities, executed by the «secular» Turkish State.

On the Death of My Husband: Widow of Fr. Daniil Sysoev

Thank you, dear ones, for your support and prayers. I can’t express my pain in words. It’s like the pain of standing by the Cross of the Saviour. Yet, it’s also a joy that you can’t convey by mere speech… it’s the joy of coming to the empty tomb. Where is thy victory, O death? Fr Daniil foresaw his demise several years before the crime.

He always wanted to be found worthy of martyrdom, and the Lord granted him this crown. Those who shot him, wanted to spit on the face of the Church, as once they spat on the face of Christ, but, they have not achieved what they wanted, because they failed to spit on the Church. Fr Daniil ascended his Golgotha right inside the church that he built and where he committed all his time and strength. They killed him as though he was an ancient prophet, between the altar and the place of sacrifice, and he rightly earned the title of a martyr. He died for Christ, Whom he served with all his might. Η διδασκαλία του για τη θέωση του ανθρώπου και τη μετοχή του στις άκτιστες ενέργειες του Θεού, εκφράζει την ουσία της ορθόδοξης πνευματικής ζωής, σε πλήρη αντίθεση με την εκκοσμικευμένη θεολογία της εποχής του, πού διαμορφώθηκε με την επίδραση του σχολαστικιστικού ανθρωποκεντρισμού του ρωμαιοκαθολικισμού.

Ο άγιος Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς αποτελεί σπάνια περίπτωση στη ζωή της Εκκλησίας. Πρόκειται για θεολόγο θεόπτη, πού εκφράζει την ουσία της ορθόδοξης πνευματικής ζωής με μοναδικό συνθετικό τρόπο. Εχει ως θεμέλιο της πνευματικής του καταρτίσεως τη βίωση της θείας χάριτος και, τη θέωση μέσα στο φως των ακτίστων ενεργειών του Θεού. Προικισμένος με οξύ νου μπόρεσε να κινηθεί άνετα στον χώρο της θεολογίας και να εκφράσει ακραιφνή τριαδολογία με τα σημαντικά έργα του.

Γεννήθηκε το 1296 στην Κωνσταντινούπολη από επιφανείς γονείς. Ο πατέρας του Κωνσταντίνος Παλαμάς προερχόμενος από τη βαθύτερη Μικρά Ασία ήταν συγκλητικός και μέλος της αυτοκρατορικής αυλής του Ανδρονίκου Β’. Ο αυτοκράτορας τον εκτιμούσε ιδιαίτερα και γι΄ αυτό του ανέθεσε την ανατροφή του Ανδρονίκου Γ΄, εγγονού και διαδόχου του. Φαίνεται όμως ότι δεν τον απορροφούσαν τόσο τα πολιτικά έργα όσο τα πνευμα­τικά, αφού κάποτε σε συνεδρίαση της συγκλήτου, θέ­λοντας ο αυτοκράτορας να του ζητήσει τη γνώμη του τον βρήκε αφοσιωμένο στην προσευχή και δεν τον διέκοψε, πιστεύοντας ότι βοηθεί περισσότερο με την προσευχή του παρά με τις σκέψεις του. Ο πατέρας του, αφού πρόλαβε να φορέσει το ράσο του μοναχού και να λάβει το όνομα Κωνστάντιος, εκοιμήθη σχετικά νέος, όταν ο Γρηγόριος ήταν επτά ετών. Την προστασία του ανέλαβε ο αυτοκράτορας.

Η μητέρα του Καλή και οι αδελφές του Επίχαρις και Θεοδότη κατέληξαν μοναχές, όπως και οι αδελφοί του Μακάριος και Θεοδόσιος, πού τον ακολούθησαν στον μοναχικό βίο. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »
