The Feast of Saint Evdokimos – the feast of humbliness

Sărbătoarea Sfântului Evdokim – sărbătoarea smereniei

English

In the cycle «Spiritual Picture of the Day» we will offer a small glimpse from the feast of Saint Evdokimos which ended a while ago. It is the feast of the humbleness, the feast of the power to wish to remain unknown.

Saint Evdokimos is an unknown saint found in the Vatopaidi’s ossuary in 1840, during some reconstruction works. He was found by the beautiful fragrance of his holy relics. He was found dead in a prayer position with an icon of Virgin Mary on his chest. Judging from his clothes, he was dead 100 – 150 years before. From then, the saint does many miracles to the ones who pray to him.

..but besides that, there is a very important aspect: he knew that he will die and he went away from the glory of the humans to be with God. Only with God. And God accepted him.

Nowadays, we do exactly the opposite: we go away from the true glory which came only from God and hunt the vain glory that comes from humans – soap bubbles which is several seconds disappear in the thin air.

Perhaps God urges us to bend our knees in front of the virtue of humbleness of this unknown saint and ask for his help, in order to show us that we are in the wrong way.

See the photos to convince for yourself.

The Old Byzantine Tower – Ο παλιός Βυζαντινός πύργος (Photoreport)

General view of the tower - Γενική άποψη του Πύργου

English

The photo report for this week depicts the byzantine tower of Kolitsou which is the last remnant from an old italian Athonite monastery called the monastery of Kaletzes. The monastery was abandoned after the Great Schisma and the tower, one of the finest example of Byzantine towers, entered in the possesion of Vatopaidi.

The later construction phase may date to the second half of 14th century, when John Cantacuzene ordered the building (or repair) of the tower.

One of the worse things which are to be seen today in our culture is that we try to reinvent the wheel. Even worse, we reached at the point in which we say «the wheel isn’t good anymore as it is, let’s build it from the beginning. Α square one».

However, in order to see far away we must stand on shoulders of giants. We must use the experience of forerunners. We must use our tradition. I think that’s a nonsense to invent the «new» for the sake of new.

In order to have the power to go forward we must know where we come from.

Our duty is to love others. We musn’t expect them to love us but we must do everything to love others.

Remember, God is love and He loves everything with an absolute love. He doesn’t try to please us by fullfiling our passions in order to be «popular». Ηe doesn’t expect our love, while Ηe loves us unconditionally. However we must love Him in order to be like Him.

So the key is to love your neighbour. But for this we must sacrifice ourselves. It is not easy but the joy of resurection comes only through the cross. Patience… there is no other way…Think that at some point in our lives, we will carry a cross either fro illness or death of a loved one or false accusations or griaf or hardship. Then why not bear it and enjoy Ressurection?…See photo

All of us must remember that we are mortals. We will all eventualy die. And after death we will pass from God’s Judgement.

We usually tend to judge others, especially our spiritual leaders, forgetting that they too will stand in front of God. This happens because we usually conviniently forget that we will also be subjects of God’s judgement.

That’s why, I think, it is better to be constructive and pray for others because you never know what pressure is upon them and what fights they give. Never. Until the Final Judgement.

At the beginning of the Liturgy, receiving the light - Στην αρχή της Λειτουργίας λαμβάνοντας το φως

English

We must never forget that we are the descendants of the Holy Apostles. This doesn’t imply to go to preach at all costs, but implies that we must have their faith.

We must know that when we are called to preach, we receive the necessary grace in order to overcome everyone. But it depends on our faith to activate this grace.

But we will not conquer the others’ lands, neither others’ money but their hearts. And then it will be paradise on earth.

The thing is to have such a faith.

The photos were taken at a liturgy in Vatopedi Monastery with the Siluanos of Gyula, the romanian archbishop in Hungary.

Today we have a new photo report from our series of «Spiritual Picture of the Day» with the occasion of Celebration of the Holy Cross.

I think that today there isn’t any other feast which is so much in contradiction with our real intentions in our day-by-day life.

We celebrate the Holy Cross but simultaneously we live a life full of sinful pleasures, a life driven by passions. We don’t have the courage to get out from there living in fact an internal Civil War.

But, anyway, what can be Civil in a War?

We forget that the Cross is the complete love of ascetism, and is the only way to the Resurrection. There is no true resurrection without cross and no true cross without resurrection. Through the cross came the happiness in the world. Through the cross.

… and to show by facts that the Holy Cross is life-giving, below you’ll see a miracle which happens each time at the Feast of Holy Cross at H.G.M. of Vatopaidi (Holy Mount Athos).

There are more pieces from the Holy Cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and one of them is taken out from the Holy Altar in this day. After the veneration, at the end of the Vigil, under the Holy Cross is put a mixture formed from water and flour. This dead mixture takes life from the Holy Cross and at the end of the Liturgy it is lump which grows and it is used by the fathers to make bread and prosfora till next feast of the Holy Cross. Hence the bread and prosfora are done at Vatopaidi without yeast. See photos…

One of the most traditional things in a Monastery is the process of making prosfora (Oblation Bread) for Liturgy. The monks do themselves all the things from the beginning till the end. The Holy Comunion is the central part in the life of the Church. Unfortunately though, we disregard it and seldom we prepare to receive it, invoking different causes.

And this is a proof that we are away from the center of the Church which is Christ.

Oddly enough, we aren’t interested to meet  Christ, to give us life but we are interested to meet Him to crucify Him through our sins.

And this is a proof of the human distortion….See photo

Sometimes I’m speechless.

Sometimes I’m happy. And I’m happy when I’m speechless in front of a «delicacy» of nature and not in front of human brutality.

He was very beautiful gentle and delicate. We talked in silence about a half an hour. He was very kind and allowed me to take a bunch of photos of him. We shook our hands and he left in his paradise.

Just a simple story.
