Kazakh leader tempts foreigners with ice and frost

ASTANA (Reuters) – Freezing weather may have brought misery to Europe, but for Kazakhstan it is a selling point.

President Nursultan Nazarbayev, in an annual speech on Tuesday, said more diplomats should move to his country’s icy capital, Astana, to enjoy its extreme weather.

Hunger, family homelessness on rise in U.S. cities

Hunger is spreading while the number of homeless families is increasing as a result of the recession and other factors, according to a report on Tuesday.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors said cities reported a 26 percent jump in demand for hunger assistance over the past year, the largest average increase since 1991.

Middle-class families as well as the uninsured, elderly, working poor and homeless increasingly looked for help with hunger, which was mainly fueled by unemployment, high housing costs and low wages.

Manitoba (Reuters) – Ορισμένες καναδικές επαρχίες έχουν σταματήσει τη χρήση μιας συγκεκριμένης παρτίδας του εμβολίου της γρίπης H1N1 μετά το γεγονός ότι έξι άτομα παρουσίασαν σοβαρές αλλεργικές αντιδράσεις, είπε η υπηρεσία υγείας της χώρας τη Δευτέρα.

 ISTANBUL (Reuters) – One of the world’s oldest functioning Christian  monasteries has won a legal battle to have land it had owned for  centuries restored to it, after a Turkish court ruled on Friday it  could not be claimed by the state.

The dispute over the boundaries of Mor Gabriel, a fifth-century Syriac  Orthodox monastery in eastern Turkey, had raised concerns over freedom of religion and human rights for non-Muslim minorities in Turkey, a predominantly Muslim country and European Union aspirant.
