Saint Angelina was the daughter of the Godly Orthodox Prince of Albania, the brave Scanderbeg. At that time most of the people of Albania were Orthodox Christians who were glorious in their defense of the Faith. At the court of her father who ruled this people the princess Angelina grew up, increasing in the gifts of the Spirit by the help of the Lord God, and her will made strong by the teaching of Christ. The name of her mother is not known, but we can see how she was brought up and what great care her parents gave to the training of her soul in the spirit of the Gospel teaching – and who but her mother would have given so much thought to the growth towards God of her heart and soul? Another cloud was waiting for us there. We went inside and it transferred us somewhere to the west. I have the impression that we did not travel for a long time towards the west because the cloud suddenly changed direction and quickly descended towards a ravine. My angel guide ushered me into a dark place. From the very first steps we took, we descended into darkness so thick and so dark, that no other could be worse than this one. We were hit by a terrible stench from the depth of this darkness and I could barely breathe.

A New Monument to Patriarch Pavle is Unveiled in Serbia

Bishop Irinej Gavrilović of Niš (1931- ) unveiled a monument to the  late Patriarch Pavle Stojčević (1914-2009) of Serbia. He is one of the three top contenders for the post of Serbian Patriarch. The other two are Metropolitan Amfilohije Radović of Montenegro and Primorsky (1938- ) and Metropolitan Nikolaj Mrda of Dabar-Bosnia (1929- )

On 15 December, in the Serbian town of Niš, Bishop Irinej Gavrilović unveiled a monument-bust of the late Patriarch Pavle Stojčević on the square in front of Ss Cyril and Methodius Seminary. The future Serbian Patriarch was a professor here in 1950-51. According to the website, the faculty and students of the seminary came up with the idea of this monument. The renowned sculptress Drinka Radovanović created the bust. At the unveiling, Bishop Irinej said, “If anyone asks why this bust is in Niš, it is because whilst Patriarch Pavle was Bishop of Raška and Prizren, this seminary was in Prizren, and he taught there and was a great help to many [of the students]”. Since 1999, Ss Cyril and Methodius Seminary has been in Niš.

Serbia takes Kosovo status to court

Serbia has argued that Kosovo’s declaration of independence was a «flagrant violation» of its territorial integrity as hearings into the legality of the province’s secession opened at a UN court.

Belgrade, which rejected Pristina’s February 2008 declaration, has called on the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands to give an «advisory opinion» on its legality.

Dusan Batakovic, Serbian ambassador to France and head of the Serbian delegation at the court, told the hearing that «Kosovo is the historic cradle of Serbia and … one of the essential pillars of its identity».

The recently published International Religious Freedom Report 2009 for FYROM (26.10.2009) by the U.S. State Department, was in the FYROM media cited mostly with the sentence from the report stating that: “The Government generally respected religious freedomin practice.” Here, it is necessary to underscore the Freedom House statement that FYROM journalism is still partly free and that “political appointees are frequently named to senior positions in state-owned media, the main source of information for most of the population”

Albanian Orthodox immigrants had been arriving in America for some time and, after some troubles with the local Greek Priest in Boston, Massachusetts, the Albanians there selected Theophan (Fan) Noli to be their own Priest. Accordingly, on February 9,1908, Fan Noli was ordained to the Priesthood by Archbishop Platon in New York and the first Liturgy in the Albanian language was celebrated by Fr. Theophan in Boston on March 18, 1908. After serving for some years, organizing Albanian parishes, Fr. Theophan returned to Albania, where he was consecrated Bishop, on November 21,1923, subsequently becoming Prime Minister of that country in 1924. After a coup-d’etat, Bishop Theophan was forced to leave Albania, eventually returning to America as Bishop of the Albanian Orthodox Church in America. At his death in 1965, he was succeeded by Bishop Stephen (Lasko), who joined the Albanian Church to the newly-autocephalous Orthodox Church in America in October, 1971. Another tiny Albanian Diocese in America is under the spiritual care of the Patriarch of Constantinople.

In the 18th Century, the great Orthodox Christian missionary work which began with Pentecost in Jerusalem, so many centuries before, finally crossed from the continent of Euro-Asia into North America. The first missionaries traveled with the explorers Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov, who formally claimed Alaska and the Aleutian Islands in 1741. For the next fifty years, together with the exploration and economic development of this new outpost of the Russian Empire, the first attempts were made to bring the Orthodox Faith to the natives of that region (the Aleuts, the Athabascan Indians, the Tlingits, and the Eskimos).

The Patriarchate of Constantinople again, at least nominally, became independent after World War I and the rise of modern, secular Turkey, although greatly reduced in size. At present the Patriarch’s jurisdiction includes Turkey, the island of Crete and other islands in the Aegean, the Greeks and certain other national groups in the Dispersion (the Diaspora) — in Europe, America, Australia, etc. — as well as the monastic republic of Mt. Athos and the autonomous Church of Finland. The present position of the Patriarchate in Turkey is precarious, persecution still exists there, and only a few thousand Greek Orthodox still remain in Turkey.

Virtual family

I will tell you again about one of my personal experiences. At some point of time Father told me: ‘Connect to Skype.” I did not know whether he was speaking metaphorically, “skaj” as heavens in English, so that I would pay more attention to heavenly things and spiritual way of living, or he was talking about the Skype program. So I asked him and got the answer to connect to Skype program. Then I notice that, for example, my phone bill is much lower. I can see that Father gives me some advices to make my life easier. That is how I got familiar with the Skype, which did not interest me previously; I was more interested in a writing program, and the things that I work on. This is only a small example of how Father helps people by making their spiritual and practical sides of life easier.

Question: In this book Father Gabriel often mentions the virtual family, which connects all people who communicate to him into one, no matter where they are. Therefore, now we could talk about the two aspects that this book reveals. One aspect is the assembly, the collectiveness since many people met thanks to the web-site of the Monastery Lepavina and thanks to the effort of Father Gabriel. Many people virtually met this way, and now many collaborate, comfort each other, and communicate to each other. The second aspect, which we can talk about, would represent the positive characteristics and the mission, if we can call it so, of computers in spiritual life. Question: the Lord’s ways are truly miraculous. It is miraculous how Father Gabriel got a computer, without knowing how to use it, then how he learned to use it flawlessly because sometimes it seems like he knows more then those who learn about computers in schools. After he mastered the technology, Father started the missionary work which branched out, and this way he induced happiness in many people who now could, from anywhere in the world, communicate with the Father. I think that communication via internet, love for the God, love for fellow beings, and spreading of the Word of God represent the exact and essential value of this book. How would you present this book to the people who did not have an opportunity to communicate with Father Gabriel via internet?

Answer: As far as I understand, as a spiritual child and as someone who met Father Gabriel, his spiritual work has always been very meaningful; it has been polyvalent, and one can always look at his work from many different angles. His work has always been founded in Christian deed and strictness in his personal life. So, in his life he testifies the strictness of norms, and now suddenly from that strictness, from that one source and an internal focus, comes out his effort which reflects itself in his work via internet.

Spiritual Conversations via Skype, the book by Archimandrite Gabriel Vuckovic, was recently published. This book is specific, and unique in spiritual literature, and it is also exceptionally graphically endowed. Color photographs are taken by Darko Radanovic, and Graphics Editor is Dragi Savicevic.
Guest in our studio is Radomir Vucic, the journalist from Republic of Srpska TV Station, who got a blessing from Father Gabriel to present the book to the public. The book begins with the letter written by Archimandrite Gabriel to Metropolitan Jovan of Zagreb, Ljubljana and All-Italy, in which Father Gabriel asked Metropolitan Jovan to bless the book publishing. Additionally, the following had been written:

“The Most Reverend, I am very astonished that your nearly prophetic words, with which you gave us the blessing to purchase a computer for Monastery Lepavina, predicted a form of missionary work in the times burdened by enormous spiritual emptiness in the souls of our people. To me, an Abbot, this seemed unlikely at the time; however, through the Glory of our Lord, and with a help of the Holy Theotokos of Lepavina, those words helped me to, after working hard and learning about computer technology, peacefully converse with believers; it helped me to answer the questions of those who are seeking for spiritual advice and moralities, those who seek to drink at least a drop of the water from life-giving springs, and those who are starving for the Word of God.

«He who mocks the poor, blasphemes his Maker (Creator)» (Proverbs 17:5).

If you are wealthy, in what are you wealthy, if not in the property of God? The things which constitute your wealth, whose are they, if not God’s? Therefore, if you become proud in that which you possess, you become proud with the property of another, you become proud with that which is loaned to you by God. Why do you then mock the poor man who has less of someone else’s property in his hands? Why do you mock him if he borrowed less from God than you? If he took less, he owes less; and you who took more, owe more. Not only should you not mock the poor man, you should admire him. Behold, he leads a struggle on the battlefield of this world with much less means than you. Both of you are soldiers, only you fight as a soldier abundantly equipped with all the needs and he fights naked and hungry. If the both of you succumb and surrender to your enemy, he will be judged more leniently than you. The Holy Martyrs Vitus, Modest and Crescentia

saint-vitus-06 St. Vitus was born in Sicily of famous but non-believing parents. Modest was his teacher and Crescentia was his governess. St. Vitus was baptized at an early age and, at the age of twelve, withdrew to live a life of great mortification. Angels appeared to him, directed and strengthened him in his mortification and he, himself, was as radiant and beautiful as an angel of God. lazarLazar was one of the Serbian noblemen who ruled the Serbian empire after the death of Tsar Dushan. After the death of Tsar Urosh, Patriarch Ephrem crowned Lazar as the Serbian king. Lazar sent a delegation to Constantinople with the monk Isaiah to implore the patriarch to lift [remove] the anathema from the Serbian people. He fought against the Turkish powers on several occasions. Finally, he clashed [fought] on the Field of Blackbirds [Kosovo Polje] on June 15, 1389 A.D. against the Turkish Emperor Amurat where he was beheaded. His body was translated and interred in Ravanica, his memorial church [Zaduzbina] near Cuprija and later was translated to Ravanica in Srem and from there, during the Second World War (1942) was translated to Belgrade and placed in the Cathedral Church of the Holy Archangel Michael where it rests today incorrupt and extends comfort and healing to all those who turn to him with prayer. [In 1989, on the occasion of the six-hundred year anniversary of his martyrdom, St. Lazar’s relics were again translated to the monastery of Ravanica in Cuprija]. St. Lazar restored the monasteries of Hilendar [Mt. Athos] and Gornjak. He built Ravanica and Lazarica [in Krusevac] and was a benefactor of the Russian monastery St. Pantaleon [Mt. Athos] as well as many other churches and monasteries.

The Serbian culture endured through five centuries of Turkish occupation, although the Turks offered security and prosperity, for conversion to Turkish life styles. This Serbian culture was retarded for five centuries, after the Serbian defeat on the plain of Kosovo.

From a culture that led Europe and the Balkans during the Medieval period, the Serbian culture degenerated and stagnated, to the point that when it regained its freedom it had centuries to recover. The Turkish victory at Kosovo, was not as much political as it was cultural. «Turkish historians lay more stress on the Battle of Maritza eighteen years before, which they call Serb Sindin (Serbian defeat).» The military destiny of Serbia was sealed at Maritza. Contemporary chroniclers, without the benefit of hindsight, felt that Kosovo was only one of a series of bloody engagements, leading to the collapse of the Serbian kingdom. From the fourteenth century to the present day, the land of Kosovo and Metohija has been, and will always remain, the spiritual heartland of the Serbian Orthodox nation. Sanctified by a multitude of monasteries and churches as well as by the blood of martyrs, the holy land of Kosovo occupies a place of honor and reverence within the souls of all believing Serbs.

After the sack of Constantinople by Crusaders in 1204, the province of Kosovo became the center of the Serbian Nemanjic state. Tsar Dusan was crowned in Kosovo in 1331, and he, King Stephen of Decani and King Uros had residences in the province. In 1346 the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate was established at Pec (now a women’s monastery). In the early fourteenth century Kosovo was the richest and most densely populated region of the Serbian empire. It became a major commercial center for the Serbs, containing such industries as silk production, gold and silver mining, and fine crafts. Serbian rulers allotted the fertile area between Pec, Prizren, Mitrovica and Pristina and nearby areas to churches and monasteries, and this area eventually acquired the name Metohija, from the Greek metochion, meaning an estate owned by the Church. Many of the most beautiful Serbian monasteries and churches, as well as castles and fortresses, were located in Kosovo. NE SUDITE (Σέρβικα, Serbian)


Dragi moji, neka ove reči Gospoda našega Isusa Hrista budu zakon u našem životu… » Ne sudite!» izgleda laka zapovest. Laka, jer kada bismo je analizirali sa pažnjom, moguće je zakljuciti da je lako izbeći osude. Lako je zaštiti dušu našu i naša usta od nje. Osuda nije u nama začeta od rođenja i nije deo naše duše. To je nešto spoljašnje, posebno kada se ne začinje iz mržnje i netrpeljivosti, nego iz naše uobičajene navike da uvek pričamo o nekom drugome.

U stvarnosti, osuda je težak greh. Na žalost, lako se širi. Osudu susrećemo svuda. To je kao zagađeni vazduh koji mi svakodnevno udišemo. To je toliko uobičajena pojava da se može reći da je postala normalna za čoveka. «Ništa ne pričinjava čoveku veće zadovoljstvo, nego da osuđuje druge», kaže Sveti Gregorije Bogoslov. Upravo zbog lakog širenja osude, teško je boriti se protiv nje. Teško je boriti se protiv ovog greha, a još je teže ispunjavati Božju zapovest koja glasi: «Ne sudite!»

Niko ne može osporiti ovo tužno stanje u nama, ali ni jedna osoba zdravih razmišlja ne može tvrditi da je osuda opravdavajića. Teško nama ako, kao etičko merilo za vodjenje ipravnog zivota, mi uzimamo za primer neuredan život drugih. Naša savest, bez obzira koliko zaslepljena zbunjujućim i neurednim stanjem društva, pobuniće se i osudiće osudu. Zavapiće naša savest da našim životima ne treba da vladaju glas i navike sveta, već ona-savest, koja u konačnoj analizi jeste glas Božiji. Zbog toga svaki čovek, bez obzira koliko daleko otišao u osudu, smatra «Ne sudite!» važnom i ispravnom Božijom zapovešcu. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

SVAKODNEVNA DUHOVNOST: Zahvalnost u srcu (Σέρβικα,Serbian)


Sveti Apostol Pavle u Prvoj Poslanici Korićanima kaže: «Blagodarim neprestano Bogu mojemu za vas, na blagodati Božijoj koja vam je data u Hristu Isusu» (Kor.1:4). Beleška u našem pravoslavnom priručniku, koja objašnjava ovaj Biblijski citat kaže: «Ništa nije toliko drago Bogu kao naša zahvalnost za Njegovu milost prema nama i bližnjem našem.»

Ova kratka napomena veoma je važna, jer nam objašnjava da zahvalnost srca rađa ljubav i pokazuje nam put ka Gospodu. Kada počnemo da osećamo Božiju ljubav,upećemo da osetimo i prepoznamo pozitivne promene u nama. Bog koji je stvorio svemir( tj. nešto iz ničega) dao je život svemu, pa i nama. Mi postojimo po promislu Njegovom. Kao naš Stvoritelj, Bog nam daje sve neophodno za životnu radost i zadovoljstvo. Međutim, On nas ninašta ne prisiljava.Mi imamo potpunu slobodu da govorimo, radimo, samostalno mislimo…On hoće da mi imamo tu slobodu i On nam je ne uskraćuje čak i ako se odlučimo da ga se odrekenemo.

Bog hoće da ga mi ljubimo,ali da ljubimo i bližnjega svog. Bog zna da ljubav prema Njemu i bližnjem našem jeste ključ unutrašnjeg mira. Ta ljubav je temelj za život ispunjen radošću; život bez briga i strahova. Da bismo to ostvarili, Gospod od nas traži samo jednu žrtvu, a to je da uzmemo krst naš i da ga sledimo. «Ako hoće ko zamnom ići, neka se odrekne sebe i uzme krst svoj i zamnom neka ide. Jer ko hoće život svoj da sačuva, izgubiće ga, a ako ko izgubi život svoj mene radi, naći će ga»(Mat.16:24-25). Ova zapovest znači da pratimo Gospoda i da se neprestano borimo protiv naših grešnih sklonosti, kako bismo živeli u radosti i miru. Uprkos činjenici da je On naš Stvoritelj, Gospod je sebe prineo kao žrtvu, da bi otkupio grehe koje smo mi počinili onda kada smo ga se odrekli. Gospod je pretrpeo raspeće i smrt na Krstu da bi nas izbavio, da bismo pobedili greh i da bismo naše živote ponovo usmerili ka Njemu. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »
