Elder Joseph of Vatopedi on the life and personality of Abbess Taisia

Our Church, with its rich patristic tradition, is not devoid of examples and stories on spiritual matters in order to coach its people. Both our Fathers and the martyrs have left abundant material of remarkable splendor which refers to their life stories. Their sweet smelling sayings and their teachings have drawn the luminous trail for the salvation of those who would like to take the narrow and sorrowful path which leads to the Kingdom of God.

Saint Nektarios Metropolitan of Pentapolis (Libya) and the Vatopedi Monastery (2nd nocturn)

by Andri Hatzikosta-Tofalidou

The written works by the Saint indicate his holy passion
His writing and publication of his works was an accomplishment of his godly passion to spiritually strengthen the people of the Church. He could not overlook the fact that both laymen and the clergy were deeply ignorant and that there was a lack of spiritual books those days.
He was deeply disturbed by the realization that the congregation was suffering- “there is an almost general displacement of the beliefs of those deluded by the new deception…”( 7th Letter) read more… Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

An exclusive interview by the Abbot of the Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, Elder Efrem (16 May 2010)

to Yianna Papadakou

“Our meeting in 2006 was an initiative by Karamanlis”

Father Efrem unleashes both fire and meaningful messages against members of the Karamanlis government in an interview with the Kyrakatiki (Sunday) Elefterotypia, shortly before the final verdict of the investigating committee for the Vatopedi scandal.

He reveals that it was the then Prime Minster Karamanlis who had the initiative to meet with him at the Holy Mount Athos back in July 2006!However, he insists that the only subject of the discussion was the creation of the ‘Saint Gregorios Palamas’ Foundation. But, he avoids connecting the establishment of the Foundation at the Olympic land, even though its building plans had been in place since 2006, something the then Prime Minister knew about. read more… Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

An open ended interview with monk Arsenios of Vatopedi (Sunday 16 May 2010)

by Sotiris Stathopoulos

Why did you make a statement to the investigating committee at this time?
In 2008, both Elder Efrem and I, just attended the investigative committee and handed over a memo, in which we had asked not testify as witnesses. They had then told us to wait outside. Eventually, we had left the building, under the impression that the committee had agreed not ask us to give a statement. Two years later though, today, when so many people continue to twist the truth, we decided that it is crucial that our position which is the only truth, be heard. All this time, so many things have been said about us without our permission, and we had been witnessing an unprecedented smear campaign which defamed the image of the Great and Holy Monastery of Vatopedi and its mission. read more… Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

Letter in the press on Vatopedi Monastery

By Olga Konaris Kokkinos,
Journalist

Everyone knows that when one is deliberately ignoring certain facts, one is equally guilty had he been falsifying them. And this is true of the press.
In the last twenty days, Cypriot papers have been isolating some quotations from a certain book written by Yeronta Iosif Vatopedinos regarding the virtue of obedience, and gave the false impression that “yerontas”, or elder, tries to take the position of Jesus in the monasteries, and that Jesus Himself is nowhere to be found! They also implied that, when Yerontas Efraim travels outside Ayio Oros , carrying with him the Ayia Zoni, of our Lady, for people to worship, he does so in order to promote his image as “The” elder and that  any donations offered by the faithful are misappropriated by the monastery.

Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi (1/7/1921 – 1/7/2009): A Brief Biography

Elder Joseph, insignificant according to the world, was born in Drousia, a small village in the district of Paphos on the island of Saints [Cyprus], on July 1st 1921. His mother Evgenia gave birth to her little child when she was seven months pregnant at the Monastery of the Holy Unmerceneries in Giolou on the feastday of these Saints. The mother thought the child had died, yet he lived. The infant received the name Socrates upon being baptized.

Little Socrates was closely raised by his peasant parents living from a young age the hard life. When he succeeded in finishing the fourth grade of Elementary School, he was needed to do field work. Until he was fifteen years old he remained in his village. Διαβάστε τη συνέχεια του άρθρου »

A simple biomedical presentation of the first miracle of Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi (Mount Athos), who smiled 45 minutes after his death.

Part 1. The contemporary situation.

The present contribution describes a miracle that, as far as we know, is almost unheard of in the entire history of Christianity. A dead person (Elder Joseph of Vatopaidi) smiled. Impressive is the fact, that this smile occurred 45 minutes after his death. This is photographically documented. There have been reported a lot of miracles with dead persons (prophets, saints, e.t.c.). But almost never before did occur a miracle like the one that happened on July 1, 2009 in the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopaidi (Mount Athos, Greece)

Since many months, the spiritual family of Elder Joseph (namely the Brotherhood of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopaidi and especially Abbot Ephraim) suffers a unique, for our days, persecution. The latter consists of all kinds of lies and slander. Every father is sad, when his children are acused. But he is much more sad, when the acusations are faulty. Elder Joseph, being the spiritual father of this family, suffered from this persecution as well. But where sin abounded (in this case the unjust and systematic persecution of the Vatopaidi Brotherhood and of Abbot Ephraim by the pathetic watchdogs of the New World Order), grace did much more aboud (in this case the smile from eternity) (Apostle Paul, Letter to Romans, chapter 5, vers 20).
